Dudhi kofta Curry / Bottlegourd Dumplings in Tomato Gravy

Dudhi means bottlegourd in hindi. It is also known as Lauki.

Bottlegourd is widely used in all parts of India.

Bottlegourd is a vegetable which has more water content which aids in body eight reduction.

Bottlegourd is used in making curry , kulambu and stirfry. It has a slight sweet taste and acquires the taste of the masala added.

This was delicious curry , we had it with dosa and plain rice.

Requirements :

For Gravy :

Tomato – 3

Curd – ½ cup

Ginger – 1’’ piece

Garlic – 5 cloves

Onion – 1

Green chillies – 2

Cashew nuts – 10

Chilli powder – 1 tsp

Coriander powder – ½ tsp

Cumin powder – ½ tsp

Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

Salt as required

Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp

Oil – 2 tbs

For koftas :

Grated Bottlegourd – 2 cup

Gram flour / besan flour – ½ cup or more

Black pepper powder – ½ tsp

Ginger garlic paste – ¼ tsp

Garam masala – 1 tsp

Salt as required

Oil for frying

Method :

Making of koftas :

Squeeze the excess water out of the grated bottlegourd. I used along with the skin.

Add this to a bowl .

Add in the gram flour , pepper powder , garam masala and salt.

Mix well and shape into small cylinders.

Deep fry the koftas in oil at medium flame till golden brown.

Making of gravy:

Grind the cashewnuts, ginger, garlic, green chillies, onion and tomatoes along with the curd to a fine paste.

Heat oil in a pan, add the cumin seeds and let it splutter.

Add in the grounded paste and cook for few minutes with closed lid. Keep stirring in between.

When the oil separates on top , add in the chilli powder , coriander powder , cumin powder , turmeric powder and required salt.

Add in a cup of water and let it boil for few minutes.

Now , add the fried koftas and simmer for five minute.

Duhi kofta curry is ready to serve.

Serve this with plain rice , roti or paratha. It tastes good with dosa too.
